Look Inside Chicago's "Terra Cotta Row"
Terra Cotta Row is a cluster
of four homes on the 1000 block of West Oakdale in Lake
View. The most impressive of them is the Henry Rokham house,
which is so detailed with terra cotta rosettes, plaques, and
even a front fence that it’s easy to miss another set of
artistic ornaments: the home’s numerous stained-glass
windows. Chicago Magazine and Prudential Rubloff gives us an
inside tour.

Charles Thornton is renowned
for his engineering achievements around the globe: The
Petronas Twin Towers in Malaysia, Taipei 101 in Taiwan and
Comiskey Park in Chicago are just some of the masterpieces
created by Thornton Tomasetti, the company he and a college
classmate founded in 1977. Thornton, 71, also mentors young
people through a program called ACE (Architects, Contractors
and Engineers.) Here, Thornton talks about his life calling
as a mentor.

architect Avi Lothan says he designed this Lincoln Park home
for his family with his eye on the interplay between indoor
and outdoor spaces. .It’s a sharp contemporary house tucked
among far more traditional Lincoln Park homes from the 19th
and early 20th centuries, but Lothan connected it to them in
both overt and subtle ways.

we're featuring a video submission from the winning "firm"
of the 2011 Mock Firms international Skyscraper Competition
recently concluded in May. The competition required
competitors to imagine a new commercial skyscraper to be
sited in
Stockholm
Sweden under the theme “Architecture that Works,” while
developing a mock firm identity (VOX)
and design process. The first place entry hailed were
Cal-Poly exchange students studying in Denmark at the
Danish
Institute for Study Abroad.

HGTV is taking
its second annual HGTV Urban Oasis Giveaway to new heights,
creating a custom, contemporary residence on the 35th floor
of the Trump International Hotel & Tower® in Chicago. HGTV's
popular designer Vern Yip has drafted plans for the 1,000
square-foot residence that will be the centerpiece of a fall
2011 grand-prize package.
